Frequently asked questions about cover lifters
A hot tub cover lifter (also called an easy lift spa cover) is a mechanism that helps you easily remove and replace your hot tub cover. It fits onto the side of your hot tub and works with covers that fold in the middle, making lifting and removing the cover quick and hassle-free.
While it’s not required, a cover lifter can make managing your spa cover easier, especially if you have limited mobility, want to avoid getting wet from rain or snow on the cover, or want to prevent damage to the cover by keeping it off the ground. Additionally, some lifters provide added privacy by holding the cover upright.
There are several types of cover lifters:
- Hot Tub Cover Shelf: A basic shelf to slide the cover onto (cost-effective but takes up space).
- Manual Pivot: A metal bar helps lift and hold the cover upright.
- Hydraulic: Features hydraulic pistons for easy lifting with one hand.
- Gliding: Requires minimal clearance and works well in tight spaces.
- Automatic: Motorized lifters for easy, hands-free operation.
Cover lifters can be attached in two main ways:
- Deck Mount: The lifter supports are drilled into the sides of the spa (works best for square or rectangular spas).
- Freestyle or Understyle: The lifter base slides under the spa and uses the spa’s weight for support.
The required clearance varies based on the lifter type:
- Hot tub shelf covers: up to 4 feet of clearance.
- Folding cover lifters: about 2 feet of clearance.
- Gliding lifters: 14” of clearance.
- Upright cover lifters: as little as 7” of clearance.
Installation involves mounting brackets and attaching arms to support the cover. The general steps are:
- Measure and drill guide holes for the lifter brackets.
- Attach the slider and pivot arms to the brackets.
- Lay the center bar across the middle of the cover and secure the arms.
- For automatic or smart cover lifters, professional assistance or guidance is recommended.
Your dealer will generally install the cover llifter for you when you buy your hot tub.
Using a cover lifter is simple:
- For manual lifters, fold the cover in half and push it onto the lifter bar to move it out of the way.
- For automatic lifters, press a button or use a remote or smartphone app to remove and replace the cover.
