How do I maintain my spa in the winter?
For some, winter can be their hot tub’s busiest season, for others it’s a period of less use. Whichever the case, spas require the same simple care over the winter months as the rest of the year, with just a few seasonal nuances to navigate the cold and/or freezing conditions.
- Frequently check on your spa to make sure it’s running and the water level is not too low.
- Always clear your cover of ice and snow before opening.
- Remember to maintain chemical levels while the spa is not in use during the winter.
- If the spa isn’t functioning properly, DO NOT DRAIN THE SPA. Place a small space heater or 100W service light inside the access door to the equipment area and place a heavy blanket over the door to keep the spa from freezing and/or thaw any ice buildup. Make sure the light or space heater is not in direct contact or near anything that could melt or burn (shell, wires, foam, etc.). Then call your hot tub dealer to schedule service.
Typically, winterization of quality manufactured spas is not generally necessary unless you plan to be away for an extended period of time. When you are not planning to use the spa for six or more weeks, or when someone is not able to maintain the spa on a weekly basis, you should winterize the spa. To winterize and de-winterize, follow steps found in your hot tub’s owner’s manual.
