Hot Tub DOs and DON’Ts

  |   Safety   |   14 Comments

There are things you should do in your hot tub and things you definitely shouldn’t do…

The great thing about hot tubs is that everyone can enjoy them – whether you’re old or young, anyone can find an escape, relaxation, and pure happiness in the swirling warm water with massaging jets. Ahhhhhhh!

That said, there are certain hot tub activities that are approved and others that are nothing but trouble; the list of “hot tub dos and don’ts below is both your guide to bathing bliss and a warning against, well, stupidity.

DO: Rest and Relax

Eliminate back pain in your hot tubThe single most significant benefit to any hot tub is its ability to offer unparalleled rest and relaxation. Whether it’s stress, headaches or a lack of sleep, the warm water helps to release endorphins that naturally reduce stress and increase circulation. If ever you’re high-strung or simply feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders, DO soak in a hot tub and let the warm water wash away your worries.

DON’T: Fall on Your Face

If you’ve done too much relaxing in the warm waters, you might find that your muscles are so loose that they won’t work as fast as your brain would want them to. If your body is in a deep state of tranquility, mind your motor skills when getting out and DON’T fall on your face!

DO: Create a Little Romance

Enjoying Your Hot Tub TimeLovers across the world would agree that a hot tub is the perfect setting for a romantic evening alone. Whether it’s a new spark or rekindling an old flame, hot tubs were built for together time; therefore jump in the soothing warm water, hold each other close and DO whatever it is you do.

DON’T: Drink Too Much

Because the warm water in a hot tub may cause your blood vessels to dilate, it can increase the absorption of alcohol into the blood and ultimately magnifies its intoxicating effects – you get drunker, faster, in a hot tub. That can have serious negative health effects. Knowing this, don’t drink it the hot tub, but if you absolutely must, drink much slower than your normal pace and DON’T get so drunk that you can’t perform basic bodily tasks.

DO: Enjoy the Company

Legendary Hot Tub PartyWhile hot tubs aren’t necessarily engineered for lively roughhousing and swimming laps, they are great incubators for intimate conversation with family and quality time with your tight-knit crew. Although they might not be the epicenter of activity; surround yourself with the people you love, laugh until there’s nothing else to laugh about, and DO enjoy the company of great friends and family.

DON’T: Dive

This really shouldn’t even require an explanation but diving head first into three feet of water is never in your best interest, ever – no good can come of it. If you value your teeth and brain function in the least, brush twice daily, floss regularly and DON’T dive into a hot tub.

DO: Look at the Stars

Stars ClustersAlthough relaxing is often best with eyes closed, there is a whole world of wonder to be seen outside of the tub. Take a soak in hot water on a cold winter’s night and, if you’re interested in making it epic, DO look the gleaming stars above and give the universe some thought.

DON’T: Crank Up the Thermostat

Nobody likes a lukewarm hot tub but you should never get too trigger happy with the thermostat. In fact, heating the water past recommended settings can strain your body and put you in great danger; therefore, monitor the temperature and DON’T put yourself at risk by cranking up the heat beyond the safe zone.

DO: Keep Your Water Clean

Waterfall in X Series Hot Tub by Bullfrog SpasMost hot tubs these days have advanced filtration systems and some even have ozone purifiers and other automatic water cleaning methods. However, every spa requires a little bit of minor care. DO check your water and make sure that things are sparkling clean. Knowing that your spa water is pristine, you’ll be able to relax without a care in the world – and you’ll thank yourself later for that!

DON’T: Belly Flop

While diving has already been discussed as taboo, at least in relation to the shallow waters of a hot tub, there is one acrobatic act that is expressly and strictly forbidden. Intelligent individuals might make this a general rule as it pertains to any type of pool or spa diving, but whatever you do, DON’T belly flop into the hot tub!

Hi I was wondering if disconnecting a hot tub with water still in it for a couple days was bad for the filters or the hot tub in general.

Angie, it is always best to keep a hot tub filtering at approved intervals to maintain water cleanliness, however, if chemical levels are kept at appropriate levels your spa should be ok for 1 or 2 days. Be sure to run a filter cycle asap as soon as it is turned back on. This should not damage the filters.

Hi, our spa monitor has lost connectivity with the spa. How do I restore the connection?

    Thank you!

Thanks for the question. I’m sending your question to our service department and they should get back to you on this.

Actually I have a question. Will the fiberglass crack in the winter if the tub is outside (no enclosure) empty?

Thanks for the question. Most quality hot tubs are actually made from acrylic backed by another rigid material. They are able to withstand very cold temperatures and as long as they are properly drained and winterized they may be left outside empty.

can I add a drop or two of eukalyptus oil to my hot tub water?

You would want to consult with your hot tub’s manufacturer or owner’s manual to be sure. A couple of drops are unlikely to change water chemistry too much.

Hi I am looking at purchasing a bullfrog 662 spa it’s in fantastic condition for a second hand spa. My issue is its been converted to a plug and play spa which could cut down on pump power. Could this be converted back to be hardwired?

    • Bullfrog Spas | Nov 7, 2016 at 1:15 pm

      Carolyn,

This came from our service team:
I have never seen a 662 converted to 120 volt and I’m not sure if it would work properly. Was this just a demo setup for the lights? Since this spa is a 2 pump spa it will pull too many amps and trip the breaker if it was converted to 120 volt. There is an option for a low amp which is 30 amps, however, it is still 240 volts. Was it in that setup perhaps?

The answer to the question is yes you can run any of the spas at 240 volts. You will need to make sure the pumps are 240 volt and then take the wire off of the circuit board that is connecting red ac to white ac and then we will need to check the dip switches to make sure they are set up correctly.

It would be best to contact an Authorized Dealer for proper service.

Is it safe to use Spa Aromatherapy in your Bull Frog Hot Tub, i.e. crystals/salts or oils?

    • Bullfrog Spas | Nov 7, 2016 at 9:16 am

      Cheryle,
Most salts will be fine. However, you’ll want to be careful with oils as they may impede the filtration system. There are several spa-specific aroma therapy products that are completely safe.
