The space you have available will also inform your hot tub size choice. For the sake of this article, we’re going to consider a six-person hot tub a medium-sized spa.

How big is a 6 person hot tub? A spa designed to hold and comfortably seat up to six people is usually sized somewhere between 6 ½-9 feet in width and/or length. Most often, they’re slightly rectangular in shape, or potentially squared, and seat three people on each side, with a variation of foot space and jets. Some common dimensions you’ll find are 6’8” x 7’4” and 7’4” x 7’4”.

If you’re trying to decide how many gallons of water your spa is going to require to fill, the average six-person spa can hold between 300-450 gallons, and as long as you’re diligent in your water care, will only require draining and replacing two to four times a year.

Medium-sized spas of about this size generally weigh around 500-1,000 pounds empty and up to 5,000 pounds+ when filled with water and people. It’s important to keep these numbers in mind when making a decision on which spa you plan to buy. This is why it’s important that you’ve chosen the spa’s location ahead of time. If you plan to place your spa on a deck or other raised structure, it’s important to make sure it can support your spa.

There are a number of ways in which a six-person spa might be laid out. A plug and play spa is one that does not require specific 220V electrical wiring, which means it can be plugged into a regular GFCI protected outlet. This is possible because a spa of this type only has one pump. This is only possible for small and extra-small sized spas. Once a spa capacity passes four-five people, the pump capacity has reached its limit. The only exception to this rule might be an inflatable spa that is portable, but that’s an entirely different type of therapy anyway. If you’re looking for a spa that is big enough to seat six people, a plug and play spa is not going to be a good option for you.
