Hot Tubs 101

Throughout history spas have been a focal point for relaxation and healing.  From the bath houses used in ancient Rome to the powerful jetted hot tubs of today, people have used warm relaxing waters as a sanctuary from their daily lives.

History of spas

For centuries, cultures from all corners of the globe have used the warm therapeutic waters of natural hot springs as a way to relax and heal.  Evidence has shown that people in ancient Egypt, different part of Asia, ancient Greece, as well as many cultures across Europe all soaked in hot water because of the therapeutic values it offered.  Perhaps the most notable example however was the bath houses built by the Romans.  The Roman bath houses became a cultural focal point in the day to day lives of Roman citizens.  Not only were they a place to relax and heal, they were also a meeting place where news was shared and politics were discussed.

In the modern era, spas and hot tubs started gaining popularity in the sixties.  People wanted the health and social benefits of a hot tub, but wanted it closer to home.   Modern hot tubs began as nothing more than glorified wooden barrels filled with hot water.  They were not exactly watertight or sanitary, but they did get the job done.  These first hot tubs didn’t have jets and many of them were heated by means of a fire or wood burning stove.

Though many of the first attempts were comical at best, refinements were eventually made and better quality products began to appear on the market.  Now, most hot tubs are made from molded sheets of acrylic.  These hot tubs have pumps that power an assortment of massaging jets.  Crystal clear water is maintained by a variety of chemicals and sanitizers.  In short, hot tubs have become a reliable source or enjoyment for many people around the world.

Benefits of Spas

One of the main reasons spas and hot tubs have been so popular throughout history is because of the many health benefits they provide.  They help relieve stress, improve circulation, temporally relieve arthritis pain, and relieve muscle tension just to name a few.  The hot water, massaging jets, and soothing aroma therapy combine to form an environment that helps release the tensions of life and help you to feel calm and at ease.

Another benefit is that hot tubs make a great place to gather and spend quality time together.  Imagine soaking in your hot tub alongside your spouse.  Imagine your family spending quality time together talking instead of sitting in front of the TV.  Imagine friends laughing and joking as they relax in your backyard.  Your spa will become an oasis of relaxation and enjoyment and its right in your own backyard.
