Hot Tub Care

Soft Water

One luxury that is becoming more and more prominent in homes is a water softener.  While these units provide numerous advantages throughout your home, soft water can be harmful to your spa and should not be used.

Water is “softened” when dissolved minerals, most prominently calcium and magnesium, are removed.  Because there are fewer dissolved particles, you don’t get the hard water spots and deposits typically associated with hard tap water.  As a result, you have less deposit buildup on your home's plumbing system, your dishes sparkle more, and your soap will lather better.  Unfortunately, there are also some negative properties associated with soft water, especially when it comes to your spa.

In an effort to replace the minerals lost in the softening process, the soft water in your spa will begin to draw elements from different spa components and can potentially become corrosive.  Over long periods of time, this process of replacing minerals can damage your spa.

Another side effect is that soft water can lead to excessive foaming.  Soap and detergent residues from you skin, hair and bathing suit are typically held in check by the minerals and mild anti-foaming agents in spa water. However, as soft water leads to better lather in the shower, it also makes it possible for these residues to foam up in your spa requiring the addition of more anti-foaming agents to keep foam levels down.  For these reasons, we recommend that spa owners use a water source that is not softened when filling their spas.  We also recommend that you avoid the use of extremely hard water, as this can lead to excessive scale build-up on your spa.

Or course, water chemistry differs from region to region and what might be best in one area might not necessarily work in another.   The best resource for finding out what will meet the needs of your specific area is your local authorized Bullfrog Spa Dealer.  There you will find experts who are familiar with the makeup of your local water and can suggest products and practices that will help keep your spa water clean and refreshing.
